Abstract

As it is understood from the title of the study, it aims to redefine the concept of equivalence. In addition to this, some problems occuring depending on the concept of equivalence will be given place in the study. Among these problems firstly, comes the question of how the concept of equivalence must be defined. In this context, the definitions belonging to different theorists such as W. Koller, Mona Baker, Eugene Nida, Roman Jakobson, John Cunnison Catford, Peter Newmark, Susan Bassnett, Lawrence Venuti will be given and it will be determined that which of these definitions and approaches is the most commonly adopted one. During this determination, the opinions of reserachers studying in the field of translation in our country, such as Mine Yazıcı, İsmail Boztaş, Mustafa Çakır, Yusuf Eradam, Cengiz Tosun, Hanife Alkan will be made use of. Apart from this, the importance of the translator in the translation process will be focused on; the qualities that the translator must have, will be given and it will be expressed that the translator is not always a mediator causing meaning losses; but he is also the one who can find solutions in the situations of untranslatibility by using his creativity. In the latter parts, the other equivalence problems such as meaning losses in translation and false equivalences will be given place. The study will be concluded with the opinion that today, Nida’s “equivalent effect” approach is more commonly adopted compared with the other approaches about the concept of equivalence.
