Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine self-efficacy belief level in early foreign language teaching of foreign language teachers. The participants of the study consist of 150 foreign language teachers (German-English) from the cities Ankara, Konya and Adana, who worked in private and state schools in Turkey during the 2013–2014 education year. The research data was collected through “Survey for the Self-Efficacy Belief Level in Early Foreign Language Teaching”, which prepared considering the English teacher proficiency criterion of the Turkish Ministry of Education. Statistical techniques such as percent-frequency, means- standard deviations, t-test and ANOVA were used for analyzing the data. The study results reveal that 18 % of the foreign language teachers have a high level ( = 24.59), 54% have an average level ( = 16.45) and 28% have a low self-efficacy belief level ( = 8.76) in early foreign language teaching. The research finding search out that the total participants (N: 150) of the study in other words all of the foreign language teachers have an average self-efficacy belief level ( = 8.76) in early foreign language teaching. Furthermore, the findings show that self-efficacy belief level in early foreign language teaching of foreign language teachers significantly differ according to gender and the sort of schools (private- public) but don’t significantly differ according to the teaching domain (German-English) and the teaching experience. Based on the results of the study, some suggestions made for the departments of foreign language teaching.
