Abstract

The shadow play of Karagoz which is a product of Turkish nation’s acute mind and which has an important place in traditional Turkish Theatre fulfils important functions in Turkish education by its educational aspect with regard to values systematic from past to present. In connection with language and cultural transfer, it has very important functions with regard to ensuring national culture, national conscience, national solidarity and unity, developing individuals psychologically, socially, and culturally, and specifically in terms of its educational aspects both in child education and adults’ education. The shadow play of Karagoz has a very important place primarily in language and cultural transfer as well as in education with its many aspects. As a consequence of representing traditional Turkish performing arts in its most original way, although everybody, either young or old, still continues to protect its importance, it is an undeniable fact that it is not appreciated functionally as it deserves. It is an indisputable fact that the shadow play of Karagoz provided convenience for language and cultural transfer with its use in Turkish education. The aim of this study is to explore the existence and functions of the shadow play of Karagoz in the society from past to present and what kind of values it includes and to exhibit the functional use and roles of the shadow play of Karagoz. The study is a qualitative study and it is carried out via literature review method. The study makes evaluations about the importance of the shadow play of Karagoz and aims at making contributions to the individual and social level of awareness in terms of its functional use.
