Abstract

Benim Adım Kırmızı (1998) is a postmodern novel in whic Orhan Pamuk (1952) -in a historical frame- set sup a new discussion among the discrimination between Eastern and western wiew of and style kept up to date. The fundemental thematic problem dealed in this work is the conflict between two different- Eastern and western – trandition in drawing art. The basis of this problem critically conveyed to the novel by the author is the acclesiastical conservative structure of otoman culture and art concept against to westwern modern art concept. In the novel there exists a thriller made up of a homicide investigation upon a debate focusing on art between Ottoman miniaturists. Additionally a second story involving love and sexvality is featured in the novel. The disparity between Eastern and Western art concept among the artists, art and style of this period composes the thirdfictional facet which is the main conflict in the novel. Orhan Pamuk, in this multiplex fictional novel oriantes the readers attention to the Muslims’ affairs toward visual arts particularly to their perception of drawing art. The content of Benim Adım Kırmızı which composer the fiction of love, fhriller and art sometimes colleteral and sometimes unnested but in the same plane mainly consist the problem of Eastern and Westwrn approacher. The idea of these two disparate civilization are discussed in the novel among the characters representing opposition. The characters (the miniaturists) who defend the Western style and modern change in drawing art, portrait and miniature are contradicted to conervative characters who are in the same clan but defending Eastern style of art and culture. The point becavse of the fact that nothing is pure is advocated in the novel. An approach for Eastern and western view of drawing art owerlaping the author’s view comes out in this argumentation presented in the novel. In this work using inguiry and investigation method, the author will try to clarify historical background of conflicting Eastern and Western approaches in multiplex fiction Benim Adım Kırmızı.
