Abstract

Culture is like a memory that transfers the social value between generations. Societies that are from same root sustain the common scars in their culture much as live in different places because of various reasons. Even though the different elements in culture have undergone some minor changes for centuries, they continue to live in the memory of society. Proverbs are important for Turkish world in this context. It is possible to find common scars in Turkish proverbs. The proverbs, in addition to their practical benefits in language, do their most important function by storing and transmitting the culture. Shortly proverbs are language items that contain advices and experiences from past to present. Proverbs contain the several culture elements. One of these elements is Numbers. The Numbers in Turkish proverbs are not ordinary mathematical elements. Each number has semantic field, and a value known by people who are in this Culture. The meanings of the numbers in the proverbs are important evidence showing the accumulation of centuries. In this article proverbs that are from different dialects in Turkish will be analysed and their semantic fields will be evaluated.
