Abstract

It is known that literary works have a very important place in determining the existence of vocabulary in languages. Writers and poets work on language units in the context of their own styles and opinions, using the possibilities offered by the language in their works. Thus, when the literary works are revealed, the materials of the language are also presented. In these works it is often seen that vocabulary is expanded and enriched with new uses. Therefore, the contribution of the artists who are interested in literature to the formation of vocabulary can not be denied. In this study, Oktay Akbal, one of the most important figures of Turkish literature and who is best known for his stories was taken as an example. The stories of Akbal, who wrote for more than fifty years, until the end of his life, were evaluated in terms of contributions to the Turkish Dictionary. Within the scope of the study, the words (noktalaşmak, telaşçı etc.), phrases (sokaklık elbise, hayal yıkıntısı, yorgun ölgün, geceler gündüzler dolusu etc.), expressions (göz kulak kesilmek, yüreğine soğuk sular boşanmak, kurası gelmek etc.) used in the author's stories but not found in the Turkish Dictionary were examined. Also the language units (bücür, bildik, uyuklamak, gürül gürül etc.) which are in the dictionary but used in the stories with different meanings or tasks and suitable examples for some headings (fındıkçı: Baş örtülü taze tam fındıkçıydı, her defa bir başkasiyle; vergi: Bu konuda Zekâi beyin de kendine vergi ne güzel fikirleri vardı, ne eşsiz buluşları? etc.) that have been given meaning in the dictionary but are not embodied in witnesses were studied. In this sense, it is aimed to contribute to Turkish dictionary studies by detecting new uses.
