This study has been carried out in order for Turkish preservice teachers to determine the conceptual framework of the word “cousin” and to reveal its cognitive structures and thus to conclude the impact of loanwords on language with reference to the loanword “cousin”. Qualitative research method was applied in this study. Data was obtained from 99 Turkish preservice teachers’. The free word association test were used as data collection instruments. The data collected were subject to content analysis. Based on the categories, frequency was provided. The data collected through the study were divided in to 6 categories, which were stated as follows: relative, social activites, social life, emotions, different denotations and the origin of cousin. In addition, it was determined that they had some alternative concepts about “cousin”.
