Motivation in the Process of Learning Polish Language as a Foreign Language

Abstract

In foreign language teaching, the success / failure of each student is based on different reasons. Personality, environmental factors, intelligence, learning styles, anxiety, learning strategies, age, tendency and ultimately motivation are the accepted ones. Motivation, as one of the individual differences in foreign language teaching, is of the topics examined in many areas of social sciences. This study will be considered as part of the language learning process of students in the field of foreign language teaching. In this article, approaches of different linguists to motivation are examined and motivation in foreign language teaching is explained with general titles. These topics can be subdivided into complementary, instrumental motivations, attitudes towards second language speakers / society, social environment motivation, linguistic self-confidence, cultural interest, ethnolinguistic power. In addition, opinions of many researchers such as Robert Gardner, Zoltan Dornyei, Dave Scheidecker and Bill Freeman have been discussed. As a result, the main schema of the article is shaped according to Dornyei's views. Motivation is an important element in solving the success / failure of students while Polish language is studied as a foreign language to Turkish students. There are many studies in our country that examine the motivation of students. This study will be the first to measure the motivations of Turkish students, who learn Polish language. The results of the questionnaire conducted by the students who learn this language in the Department of Polish Language and Culture at Ankara University are evaluated, analyzed and presented. According to these results, various results are shown in triangle among students, their family and teachers.
