Abstract

Homework is the duty which results within the scope of a schooling as a home work for students. It serves for the preparing and the evaluation of the teaching material and helps students to internalize what they have learned and to work independently. It is an aim of homework that students independently compile connections, make learning and transfer experiences in a discovering and problem solving oriented way. The study shows that in the field "Writing skills I and II" in the first academic year homework has supported the students’ learning in everyday life. Homework has given students the opportunity to expand her learning on areas beyond the classroom, to think over acquired knowledge and to develop it. In addition, the study shows that the use of homework in the field "Writing skills I and II" can develop the learning and practice operations of students at the university and show a positive influence on test situations and exam situations thereby also. The concern of this contribution is to show that there has to be a distinguishment between apt and senseless homework. It is only effective when well prepared and thought through by teachers. The amount of homework is not crucial for the learning process. Homework given regularly can lead to slightly better achievements, as if given irregularly. As the results for the survey in this contribution have shown, it can be said that homework must not be exiled completely from the lessons, but if given, it must be meaningful on the one hand and be limited in the amount on the other hand. A temporal excessive demand of the students must be prevented. For the teacher homework serves as feedback about the learning process of the students.
