Abstract

In this research, it is aimed to determine the opinions of the sudents and the teachers about the solution proposals and the problems faced by the foreign students while learning Turkish. Phenomology design was used as qualitative research methods. The research data were gathered from 10 foreign students and 2 Turkish teachers at a secondary school in 2017-2018 education year. The working group was formed using criterion sampling which belongs to purposive sampling. Semi-structured interview was used as data collection tool. Content analysis was used and theme-category-codes were formed by taking expert opinion. Several problems originating from the Turkic language characteristics, the problems in acquiring the four basic language skills, the problems related to teaching materials, the problems related to parental attitudes, the problems related to the lectures’ methods of teaching, the problems related to orientation to the classmates were determined in accordance with the opinions of foreign students and Turkish teachers. Besides, various solution proposals were developed such as giving weighted Turkish courses, preparing textbooks that teach basic Turkic education and suitable for students’ level, training qualified teachers on teaching Turkish as sa foreign language, giving psychological support to students, providing financial assistance, and completing lacking teaching materials.
