Transformational Generative Grammar in Teaching Turkish as a Foreign Language

Abstract

In this study based on qualitative research, Turkish textbooks for foreigners was used as document. In the study based on purposive sampling, sentences showing the transformative grammatical features in Yedi İklim Course Book Turkish prepared for foreigners and Yeni Hitit for Foreigners Turkish Course Book A1, A2, B1 level are given as examples. In addition to in study is tried to show different examples of sentences with generative transformational grammar characteristics. In this study, by giving sample sentences from Yedi İklim Course Book Turkish prepared for foreigners and Yeni Hitit for Foreigners Turkish Course Book A1, A2, B1 level, it is stated that generative transformational grammar is important in teaching Turkish as a foreign language. In the study, it was understood that the sentences containing the generative transformational grammar rules are important in terms of individual differences. As a result of the research, it is stated that types of generative transformational grammar are: stylistic transformations/ displacements, selective transformations, double-based transformation (general transformations), substitution/ word changing transformation, addition and deletion transformations, passive transformation and mixed transformations. In this context examples of generative transformational sentences with reference to Turkish textbooks for foreigners were given. As a result of this research, it has been understood that generative transformational grammar is important in teaching Turkish as a foreign language. It has been implied that the generative transformational grammar that shows itself clearly in speaking and writting  related to the mind structure of each individual. Besides, it is concluded that the texts of reading with different generative transformative grammatical sentences and preparing different activities in this context will provide easy learning to Turkish as a foreign language.
