Abstract

The prefaces, expressed in the form of articles describing the subject, purpose, way of writing of a work which are also defined by names such as presentation, pre-rhetoric, first word, preliminary saying, and the introduction are the first link that the author has established with the reader. However, it is seen that many times the prefaces were ignored and started to be read directly from the introduction of the work. Therefore, it is seen that the subjects such as the purpose of writing and the place in the field remain in the background. The main purpose of this study is to determine the habbits of Turkish teacher candidates in reading, evaluating, interpreting the preface and making inferences about content of the preface in literary works. This study was carried out with 110 first-year students studying in the Turkish Education Department of Gazi University and Giresun University. Survey method was used in descriptive research methods. Preface Reading Habbit Form consisting of open-ended questions was used as a data collection tool. The students were given a total of 15 minutes and during this time they were asked to read the book which had a preface. At the end of the period, students completed the Preface Reading Habbit Form. The data obtained in the study were evaluated at two different stages and presented in two separate sections in the findings part. The results of the study are also important since there has not been any study to determine Turkish teachers’ reading habits, evaluations and interpretations about the content of the works from the prefaces.
