Abstract

The word of "value", is a concept that is frequently used in many disciplines such as philosophy, psychology, sociology, mathematics and economics and is dealt with in different aspects. The concept of "value" is also an indispensable part of the field of education which aims to bring up ideal person. Turkish society in particular, the values, gained by observing, hearing and feeling in the homes, neighborhoods, streets, bazaar-market places in the past, are today tried to be transferred at schools in certain methods under the name of "values education". However, the methods that make the value education process work and the academic studies that feed these methods face the problem of value classification. In Lutfiyye-i Vehbî, which we studied through the value classification of Schwartz, which is a Western value classification and used descriptive content analysis technique, 8 out of 10 value types in this class and 19 out of 56 values could be determined. The important part of our study is that we encountered 13 values in Lutfiyye-i Vehbi which are not included in the value classification of Schwartz. This shows that the value classification of Schwartz, which is the most frequently used and the most successful at the point of basing universal values in the value classifications, does not meet the need to evaluate the works which have been presented within the Turkish-Islamic civilization. The fact that we do not have a full classification of values, which are kneaded by our own values, is a problem as the researchers approach the Western value classifications with reservations because they do not meet the need. In our study, we will draw attentions to above mentioned value classification problem, with reference to work of Sünbülzâde Vehbî, namely Lutfiyye-i Vehbî.
