READABILITY CONDITIONS OF TEXTS IN TEXTBOOKS USED IN TEACHING TURKISH TO FOREIGNERS

Abstract

Texts have taken place on the basis of teaching foreign language from past to present. It has been tried to develop students’ basic skills with various activities on texts. However all of these bring the issue that texts’ being appropriate to students' levels, goals and objectives. Therefore, specific criteria have been developed in order to choose texts which are appropriate to the goals and objectives, and “readability "as one of these criteria. Readability has been defined as to be able to determine the degree of difficulty of the text, according to the structural features of the text and formulas easy to use and giving objective results in order to determine the degree of difficulty which has been developed. In this study, readability conditions of texts in New Hitit Turkish for Foreigners 1, 2, 3, course books prepared by Ankara University TOMER according to the criteria of Common European Framework of Reference have been examined. The purpose of this study is to determine how much appropriate of levels of texts in this course books in terms of levels of foreign students. This is a descriptive study. Difficulty levels of texts in Turkish course books 1, 2, 3 for New Hitit for foreigners have been identified by using readability formulas. Twenty (20) texts from the first book, forty (40) texts from the second book and thirty eight (38) texts from the third book are chosen. At the end of the study, it is determined that there are texts appropriate to students’ levels and above their levels in course books.
