TURKISH PROSPECTIVE TEACHERS’ OPINIONS ABOUT USING CURSIVE HANDWRITING

Abstract

The cursive handwriting with based on voice sentence method in Turkish education programme has been used in 2005, it provides students’ as thinking, comprehension, putting in order, classification, analyse/syntheise, consideration, communicating skills, mental and linguistic development. The most contoversial point of programme is about using cursive handwriting. It is remarked that using this type of writing goes on especially after primary school. The source of the problem ranges to teacher trainee programmes and especially form tutors and Turkish prospective teachers’ attitudes and experiences are important. This research aims to present opinions of Turkish prospective teachers who aims to develop students’ writing skills development, about cursive handwriting. In this research; among the qualitative research and data build–up method, semi-structured interview was used. The semi–structured interview form is formed of three questions, these are problems about cursive handwriting that prospective teachers faced, this type of writing’s advantages and prospective teacher’s solution offers. The worker group of this research is 39 prospective teachers that study in department of Turkish Education, Education Faculty, Recep Tayyip Erdogan University in the fall term of 2013 – 2014. The data after interview was classified of their importance and searched by document analyse method. At the end of the research, it is determined that Turkish prospective teachers don’t have positive attitudes about cursive handwriting. Prospective teachers generally have seen cursive handwriting as an obligation, and they emphasised that it musn’t be an obligation.
