Abstract

The modern world that deprives man of personality and turns the individuals into objects causes the individual not to comprehend his/her existence completely and to be exposed to various inner disintegrations by increasing the division between man and his original self. The modern working conditions that expect personnel to have a motivated performance routinely set to certain times and movements are one of the main reasons of estrangement. The estranged individual cannot simultaneously develop appropriate relations with society. Thus, this problem reaches a sociopsychological level. The estrangement which is a diseased situation in terms of man and society is an important source for the modern artist who wants to reflect the man of age with his all aspects. Edip Cansever and Yusuf Atılgan who put the problems of individual against superior forces into the center of art in our literature, have both searched the reasons of estrangement and discussed the sights of estranged individual through characters in their works. In our study the subject of poetry of “A Hotel Clerk” part by Edip Cansever’s poem called “I am Ruhi, how do I seem” and the protagonist of Yusuf Atılgan’s “ Homeland Hotel” novel called Zebercet, a hotel clerk, will be comparatively examined in terms of “estrangement” through similarities and differences. Both of these authors have handled the hotels, the anonymous places, as the focus of estrangement;”the hotel clerks” as the prototypes of estrangement in an age of “homelessness that has become a universal destiny”.
