Abstract

ABSTRACT Mirze Elekber Sabir is one of the realistic authors of the 20th century Azerbaijani Literature. He first wrote poems which were in line with the classical poem tradition. He used aruz prosody. Then he wrote poems around social themes. Humor stands out in the poems that he wrote in the journal “Molla Nasreddin” that was issued by Celil Memmedguluzade. He wrote under the pseudonym of “Hop hop”. These poems that he wrote with humorous style made him incredibly famous. Sabir used a lot of Persian words because it was a requirement in those periods. He used them especially in gazelles that he wrote. However, he wrote his satirical poems in colloquial language. Persian words are used less in these poems. The poet, who had a critical point of view, criticized everything that the thought that was misconducted in the society in his poems from despotism to women’s and children’s rights, from language and education to rights of workers and peasants. Sabir’s friend Abbas Sehhet compiled and collected the poems that Sabri had written in miscellaneous journals to issue the book of poems “Hophopname”. Hophopname was written in Arabic as the period required so. However; its translations are available in Cyrillic and Latin alphabets. This review focuses on the poetry book of Mirze Elekber Sabir “Hophopname” and is based on the edition that was edited by Abbas Zamanov. The poems that are cited in Hophopname preserve the language and the style that was used by the poet as it is in Azerbaijani Turkish. The information is provided about the life and literary activities of the poet. His satirical poems that he wrote around miscellaneous themes have been addressed and review in respect of their content.
