AN EXAMINATION OF OGUZ ATAY’S “RAILWAY STORY TELLERS - A DREAM” STORY BASED ON TEXTLINGUISTICAL COHESION AND COHERENCE PERSPECTIVE

Abstract

Textlinguistics is one of the important branches of linguistics. In textlinguistics the relations between sentences are taken as basis in order to describe the literate text linguistically and semantically, to resolve and interpret it. Namely the text is examined based on its small, large and super structure. In this study the “Railway Story Tellers A Dream” story of Oguz Atay which entreats life stories of three story tellers in the station, station surrounding and wagons, working in railway station in a mountain top town were handled. This story is the eight and last story in his piece of art named “Waiting for Fear” where all stories of the author were compiled. Aim is to evaluate the connections between sentences forming the text. Atay, as being an intellectual with a unique style in Turkish literature is a person who is unsatisfied with some issues and who has messages to convey to readers. The messages he wanted to convey in his messages are hidden in meaning layers under the surface structure. In the study these properties of the story was conveyed by textlinguistic resolution method. Literate texts, especially short stories and stories including ironic meaning like the text handled in the study are very important in language and literature education as they include unique linguistic structures and stylistic properties. Oğuz Atay is not only an important name for Turkish Literature but also a famous name taking place in Turkish Literature and Language Narration text books. Therefore the short story of Atay was subject to textlinguistic examination as its linguistic and configurative structure includes unique properties in the context of language and literature education at high school level. In the study initially correlation was emphasized and the small structure of the text namely referential relations, relation elements, repeated words, reason-result relations were handled. In the section of story which was evaluated in the context of consistency, the meaning depth and levels were submitted to us based on the consistency elements.
