Abstract

In the research, it was aimed to determine the effect of active learning techniques on the success of 6th grade students to learn spelling (Orthography) and punctuation rules as well as their attitudes towards the lesson. Study group composed of 52 6th grade students of a primary school in Erzurum city. In the study, “pre-test post-test control group” pattern which is the most common experimental research methods was used. 52 students constituting the research were selected through random sampling. While traditional teaching method was applied in the control group, active learning techniques (station, card showing and sandwich) were applied in the experiment group. In collecting the data related to the sub-problems of the research, Spelling and Punctuation Success Test and Attitude towards Turkish Lesson Scale were used. Reliability and validity analyses of measurement tools were performed. Data related to the success levels and attitudes of students in the experiment and control groups before and after the application were collected and analysed. It was detected that there was no significant difference between the pre-test averages of students in the experiment and control groups in terms of their success in spelling and punctuation rules but there was a statistically significant difference in the post-test. As a conclusion, active learning techniques are more influential on the academic success of the 6th grade students in using the spelling and punctuation rules as well as their attitudes towards the lesson in comparison to the traditional teaching method.
