Abstract

Art education has an important place in contemporary education concepts and practices. Turkish lessons are also important in terms of bringing art education to children through texts. Purpose of this study is to determine the place and importance of art education by examining the texts in Turkish textbooks of the 5th and 6th grades of secondary school. As a methodological framework, qualitative analysis was implemented in this study. Because purpose of this study is to determine the place and importance of art education by examining the texts in Turkish textbooks of the 5th and 6th grades of secondary school. Document analysis was performed in order to reveal qualitative analysis. Criteria have been put together and "Criteria Regarding Appropriateness of Texts to Art Education" has been developed. The texts in Turkish textbooks of the 5th and 6th grades of secondary school were examined in detail by the researchers to use the developed form. As a result of the examinations, 7 texts (17,5%) in the 5th grade Turkish textbook were inadequate in terms of art education; 20 texts (50%) were low-level enough; 8 texts (20%) were moderate enough; 5 texts (12.5%) were at a sufficient level to correct only the absence of a text. 8 texts (26.6%) in the 6th grade Turkish textbook were inadequate in terms of art education; 9 texts (30%) were low enough; 13 texts (69.29%) were moderately adequate.
