Abstract

A huge migration wave has occurred towards Turkey because of the civil war in Syria since March, 2011. It has resulted in the linguistic and social problems arising from the difference of languages and cultures between two countries. This study beginning with the assumption that linguistic communication problems witnessed in these current circumstances explores the linguistic communication need of Syrian women in İstanbul and İzmir, which were among the most affected cities by the migration. The main purpose of the study is to determine how Syrian women still living in İstanbul and İzmir meet their linguistic communication needs. Thus, qualitative and quantitative data collection methods are used and it is designed as two phases: firstly, semi-structured interviews and questionnaires conducted with the non-governmental organizations and research centers working for subjects related to Syrians in İstanbul and İzmir, secondly, semi-structured interviews and questionnaires conducted with Syrian Arabic women, whom we reach randomly in İstanbul and İzmir. The sample of the study is composed of 50 women in İstanbul and 17 women in İzmir. The data collected in written forms via semi-structured questionnaires are evaluated through descriptive model. Therefore, mixed method is used for the collection and analysis of data. As a result, the abovementioned social facts are discussed in the context of linguistic communication need, which is the basic variable of the study and meeting this need through translation and solutions are offered in this study.
