Abstract

Throughout history, the teaching of foreign languages becomes a subject of debate and this debate divides the methodologists so, several different methods have appeared. Foreign language methods try to show learners how to be an active learner. Despite all the efforts to create foreign language teaching methods up to those days, we cannot talk about the existence of an ideal and sufficient method. The diversity of all these methods raises the question: what is the best of these methods? Each learner has different needs. One method does not have the same effect on learners because the usefulness of the methods may vary from one learner to another. Familiarity with the approaches and methods of foreign language teaching makes it possible to follow the process of developing new approaches and methods. We must also know the principles, limitations, peculiarities and the way to use each method to achieve an effective teaching. This study presents a general overview of the methods of French foreign language: from the audio-oral method to the communicative method. This work is a qualitative research. In this paper, we used the documentary technique that is one of the techniques of qualitative research. First, we aimed to designate the objectives and peculiarities of the methods chosen. Then, we briefly talked about teaching grammar and vocabulary in these methods. Finally, we gave examples of the course books that were prepared according to the methods mentioned.
