Abstract

In this study, three male characters (K, Sensei and Necib) of the novels Kokoro (Gönül) and Eylül, which are still assumed as the masterpieces of modern Japanese and Turkish literature, were compared in terms of the reasons leading them to death. The aim of the study is to show that these male characters, who were tested with concepts such as “friendship”, “love” and “loyalty” in the same century and chose the same path at the end of the novels. In Eylül, we accepted Necib’s death as a suicide because he confesses that he want to die just as the characters of Kokoro. According to the discourse analysis we see the correspondences between chareacters in Kokoro and Eylül. In the first part of the study, the event patterns of two texts, then the authors and the political atmosphere of the period in both countries were introduced briefly. In the review section, the discourses of Necib, K and Sensei about “friendship”, “love” and “loyalty” were examined comparatively and then the plans that they had taken about the events they experienced and the plans that they had created about the death were again put forward through their discourses. Finally, the reasons of the differences between the methods and the causes of their deaths have been tried to be evaluated from a cultural perspective. As a result, it was concluded that Necib’s suicide is egoist type, Sensei’s is alturist type and K’s is fatalist type of suicide through Durkheim’s suicide theory.
