Teacher and Education in the Turkish Novel (From Tanzimat to the Years with Village Institutes)

Abstract

The quest for the solution of problems related to National Education has been continuing for centuries. The purpose and the justification behind the attempts in this regard have always been to achieve the best and the perfect. Madrasah education had an important place in the education system of the Ottoman State. However, we see that this tradition became controversial together with Tanzimat. In the Middle of 19th Century, Teacher Training Schools were opened for the first time in Istanbul as an alternative to the madrasah tradition. Teachers graduating from these schools started to be appointed to rural provinces outside the central Organization of the State and they became prominent in the Ottoman educational institutions. With the introduction of the novel genre into our literature during Tanzimat era, teachers’ struggles, successes and desperations became the subject of many novels in our literature. In addition to the researches made in the field of pedagogy, two important subjects: “Teaching and education”, which are still pending solution in today’s Turkey, were evaluated by many writers with the technique of the Novel Genre from different perspectives. These approaches were successful and beneficial for most of the time. Starting from this point of view, we have found it worth studying the concepts of “Teaching and Education” in Turkish Novel. In our study, the novels dealing with the education given by state institutions and teacher personalities of the novels, which were published during the period form 1860s, which is known as Tanzimat Era until 1940s when Village Institutes were opened, were examined with survey model.
