Abstract

The concept of empathy, which is termed as trying to feel what one feels and thinks by putting oneself in someone else’s shoes, is one of the most momentous features for effective and healthy communication. Especially in educational life, many problems can easily be solved under favour of empathy inside or outside the classroom. The empathic tendencies of the teachers against the students have also great importance for a qualified and healthy education. Therefore, the aim of this study is to determine the emphatic tendencies of secondary school pre-service Turkish teachers. While the universe of the study consists of pre-service Turkish teachers, the sample consists of the students who are studying in the department of Turkish and Social Sciences education (the subdivision of Turkish education) at a state university in southern Turkey. The Empathic Tendency Scale developed by Dökmen (1998) was used in the study and the collected data was analysed through SPSS 21.0 programme. As a result of the analysis, it was determined that the empathic tendencies of the students in the department of Turkish education showed a significant difference in terms of gender variable, but there wasn’t a significant difference between the class variable and the school that the students themselves and their parents graduated. Since there isn’t any significant difference among the classes, the study suggests that different techniques can be used in the courses of the department of Turkish education to develop the ability to emphasize. Especially, the use of role-playing techniques in the courses; film, picture, and so on several techniques can be used to improve a person's ability to empathize. In addition to these, the empathizing ability of the teachers who are currently teaching Turkish can also be investigated and the results can be suggested by viewing from this aspect.
