The use of social media has become popular in our country as it has been all over the world. The use of social media has become popular among high school students as internet access increases. The use of social media provides people to get in contact with the people living in other parts of the world. That caused awareness on English language learning. The aim of this study is to determine high school students’ views about the effect of social media on learning English. So, we tried to determine students’ views on following people who use only English in social media and its effects on learning English. The effect of English language teaching at schools on students’ habits of social media use was also determined. Besides, we determined the views of the students whether there were any differences between English taught at schools and used in social media. The effect of how social media on students’ motivations to learn English were also determined. The study group of this study consists of 10th and 11th graders enrolled at two high schools in Elazığ city center, in 2016-2017 academic year, spring term. In the study, the ages of students and use of social media were taken into consideration. Six students at each grade level were included the study. Totally 24 students attended the study. Volunteer students participated the study. An interview form including six semi-structured questions was used as the data collection tool. It was determined that the use of social media affects learning English in different ways depending on their habits of social media use. Several recommendations are offered based on the research findings.
