Description of the Fourth-Grade Students’ Reading Skills and Reading Comprehension Process

Abstract

The aim of this study is to describe the fourth grade students’ reading process and to determine the strategies that the students use within this process. Among qualitative research approaches, instrumental case study has been used in this research. 31 students studying at the primary school fourth grade in Altınyayla, Burdur in 2014-2015 academic year were studied on. While trying to find out the strategies used by the students, think-aloud strategy was used. Narrative text, questions about the text and teacher interview form were used as a data collection tool in the research. Descriptive analysis method was used to analyse the data. Teachers specified that families of the 20 students were keen on reading, 19 students were in the habit of reading, 18 students talked fluently and fast. Furthermore, they stated that 9 students could read 120 words and more in a minute, 22 students could read less than 120 words in a minute. It was observed that students made reading failures such as eliding, adding a syllable, repetitive reading, using the finger to follow the words, changing the sounds etc. while reading. The questions that the students make mistakes were knowledge, comprehension and evaluation questions. Besides that it was seen that the students did not use any strategies before, during and after reading process.
