Abstract

The concept of text is defined as a meaningful and rational language product which is either verbal or written and meets the function of communication. Successful communication depends on the quality of texts. Beaugrande and Dressler formulated seven standards for textuality: cohesion, acceptability, coherence, informativity, intentionality, situationality, and intertextuality. They argued that communication cannot occur in the absence of any of these standards. It should be also noted that an effective mother tongue education cannot be realized using texts without the textuality standards. For this reason, the textuality of texts used in the Turkish courses comprising mother tongue education is of critical importance. This study aimed to determine teachers’ views on the textuality of the poems included in Turkish textbooks. For this purpose, the views of 15 Turkish teachers working in the province of Elazığ, Turkey were consulted. A semi-structured interview form consisting of eight qualitative questions and their alternatives was designed in order to obtain the teachers’ views through one-to-one interviews. The results indicated positive views on the textuality of the poems. The study is significant for introducing a framework for the textuality of poems in Turkish textbooks, which have an important place in language education.
