Abstract

Listening activities are the activities prepared for the listening texts in the Turkish textbooks. In the current study, it is aimed to classify the listening activities in the Turkish textbooks prepared by the Ministry of National Education in 2018 as pre-listening, while listening and post-listening activities and also according to their objectives. The current study employed the document analysis method, one of the qualitative research methods. The documents used in the study are limited to the middle school Turkish textbooks published by the Ministry of National Education in 2018. In this regard, a total of 5 textbooks were analyzed. In each textbook, there are 8 listening texts. Thus, the activities designed for a total of 40 listening texts were examined. In the Turkish textbooks, there are listening texts from various genres such as poem, story, folktale, fable, film, folksong, news, cartoons. The pre-listening activities most frequently used in the textbooks are questions asking students to share their research on the topic, what they already know about the topic (poet/author, hero, plot etc.), their opinions about the topic, what they understand from a statement (proverb, saying, verse etc.), about their experiences related to the topic. The while listening activities most frequently used are directed to note-taking, guessing, showing empathy and critical thinking. From among these, the most frequently used one is note-taking. The post-listening activities most frequently used are related to vocabulary, which is followed by asking questions about the text listened. The current study has revealed that the content of the listening activities in the Turkish textbooks do not show much variety.
