Speech Errors in Teaching of Turkish as a Foreign Language: Bosnia-Herzegovina Sample

Abstract

Self-expression of people begins by speaking. This skill which develops after listening is the most used skill in daily life. The most important skill in foreign language learning is speaking which is the most concrete sign of learning a language. Therefore, it is the skill that needs to be given the most attention. This skill, which does not have much importance in traditional language teaching approaches, has been taken into the foreground in today's language teaching approaches. In this study, the mistakes of speaking in Turkish of students studying at Bosnia and Herzegovina Zenica University, Faculty of Philosophy, Department of Turkish Language were evaluated. In this research, the following questions were formulated: “What are the errors made by Bosnian students during the conversation?”, “What are the reasons of errors?”, “What can be suggested to correct these errors?”. The sample consisted of 30 students from the 2nd, 3rd and 4th grades. Prepared and unprepared speeches were conducted with the students for 32 hours in 8 weeks. Prepared speeches are about healthy nutrition, Turkish culture, dance and football and unprepared speeches are about a book which they read, a film which they watched, culture and Bosnia-Herzegovina. In the speeches, the mistakes were evaluated by grouping and sampling and comments were made about the causes of the mistakes. As a result of the evaluations, it is observed that there are some grammatical mistakes. The use of grammar-translation method in lessons is effective in this situation. Mistakes are mostly in using vowel and consistency.
