Abstract

Abstract

In foreign language teaching according to the purpose of creation the texts are divided into two groups: fictional texts and authentic texts. The texts of both groups are used in foreign/second language teaching books. In this study, the texts of Yeni Hitit Yabancılar İçin Türkçe student’s book set, which was prepared to teach Turkish to foreigners, and New Headway student’s book set, that was made to teach English as a second language, were classified as fictional and authentic, and then authentic texts were examined in terms of language skills. Descriptive analysis, which is one of the qualitative research methods, was used in the study and the data were analyzed with the Maxqda Pro program. During the analysis of two book sets it was determined that fictional texts at each set and each level were used quantitatively more than authentic texts. In YHYIT student’s books authentic texts aim to develop reading skills more than other skills while in NH student’s books authentic texts aim to develop speaking skills most of all. It was determined that reading and speaking were the skills that were used together most frequently in NH student’s books. The analysis also showed that the most frequently used together language skills in YHYIT student’s books were reading and writing.
