Abstract

English learning has always been a focus for practicing technology-based learning and m-learning. In the language learning process, it is quite widespread now to take advantage of mobile applications as a learning aid because they provide lots of authentic activities and abundant chances of repetition that learners need. As a popular mobile application, VoScreen encapsulates several beneficial features for different language learners within age and proficiency level. With numerous video materials in the application which are clipped from famous movies, TV series or advertisements, learners are provided with a vast number of audio-visual materials, which allows them to improve their language skills, especially that of listening proficiency. Bearing those features of VoScreen in mind, this study was conducted to find out the differences between the elementary and intermediate level EFL students in terms of their perceptions towards Vo-Screen use as a tool for listening proficiency improvement. The participants of the study are 30 EFL students divided into 2 distinctive groups considering their language proficiency levels. Each group utilized VoScreen application to scaffold their listening proficiency for eight weeks. At the end of the study period, students were asked to fill a perception survey and a questionnaire to reveal the differences in their perceptions. Also, semi-structured interviews were carried out by the researchers to get in-depth sight of student opinions. The study demonstrated that there is no meaningful difference between the elementary and intermediate level EFL students in terms of their perceptions towards Vo-Screen use as a tool for listening proficiency improvement despite the fact that elementary level EFL learners have higher perception scores towards VoScreen utilization as a language learning tool. The study also revealed that EFL learners think that VoScreen use provides many benefits for them, and it is an effective listening aid.
