Abstract

It is known that words are available in the Turkish language of Turkey which are confused in use due to generally being brought from foreign languages, their sound and form (Mahsur/mahzur etc.). A list of such words are not available in the literature and they create various problems at all stages of education due to being misused. Candidate teachers who play an important role in the effective, accurate and well use of Turkish in the realization of accurate communication must possess awareness towards these words. The study group of this study which aims to identify and evaluate the level of recognition of frequently confused words of Department of Turkish Education and Department of Turkish Language and Literature students covers 253 students at 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th grades of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan University Department of Turkish Education and at 1st grades of Department of Turkish Language and Literature. The data source of the research is "Frequently Confused Words Forum". 100 words obtained from the literature were decreased to 50 words by assessing and evaluating in the light of "foreign words" and "sound similarities and variations" criteria and in consultation with the Turkish education experts. These words were used within a context; confused word pairs were shown by oblique lines in the same sentence. The form which included information such as name, surname, the graduated high school were filled in by the participants. In the research which used factorial variance analysis technique as one of the quantitative research methods, it has been concluded that the variables do not have a common effect on the level of recognition of frequently confused words and that the participants have good level of recognitions of frequently confused words although they experience problems in specific pairs of words.
