Heroic epics have a significant place in folk literature. One can find emotions and history of a community in heroic epics. These epics carry hopes and longings for the future. From these epics, we can learn about the content of some events related to which there are no historical documents. With this aspect, heroic epics are links of a historical chain. We see the soul of the historical struggles there. Woman, being a part of the society, has a special nature, different from man. Sometimes being dignified and sometimes being oppressed, woman has had her place in every era and every society. Since the beginning of the history to 20th century, division of labour all over the world has been done according to the gender. Cultural values, social acknowledgement and protocols have been shaped accordingly. While man is involved in external world activities, woman has mostly been engaged with household activities and family relations. In ancient Turkish societies, family was the most important social union and woman was the core of the family. Woman had the important duty of being a comrade to her husband and being a mother for her children. In addition, she had the image of a man who could ride a horse and who could fight when necessary. In Turkish states founded throughout the history, woman has played important roles both in social and political life. As a result of the different cultures and religions in the regions where the states were founded, there have been some changes in her roles. This important and indispensable creature of the society has been one of the basic themes in literature. Focusing on different aspects, she has been approached in epics, fairy tales, novels and various folkloric products. Woman types in Turkish epics have been investigated in this study. The study provides brief information about the place of woman in Turkish cultural history, and then focuses on the woman types that emerged from the studies on the epics. Based upon these findings, the study aims to identify woman types in Turkish heroic epics.
