The parable of Joseph, accepted from the earliest of religious stories, has been treated by many artists from the past to the present day, from east to west. The parable, which takes its source from the sacred books and is described as "Ahsenul'-Kasâs" in the Qur'an, is accepted as "not only the oldest, but perhaps heretofore the ageless novel". The number of works written after the work of Kul Ali (XIIIth Century) that is accepted as the oldest work which is about the parable in classical Turkish literature is approximately one-hundred. Since the early ages of Islam, it has been read religiously, spoken and written in the form of verse and prose stories by treating as a love adventure to a degree. However, since the subject was religious and at the same time it was talking about the life of a prophet, the artists could not make a change and a novelty about the essence of the event. Common elements such as dream, well, wolf and scale that can be described as motifs, symbols or indicators are identified in the works about the subject of Joseph parable. It is seen that there are similarities or differences in the stories in the discussion of these elements, which are used as tools in the development of the story or in the emergence of new meanings. In this declaration, the shirt of the Prophet Joseph, one of the most important motifs of Joseph parable, and which we find in different events from the beginning to the end of the story, will be mentioned. In the major masnavis written in Turkish literature, the handling of the "shirt" as a symbol and the meanings that arise from this symbol will be emphasized.
