Abstract

Words have an important function in teaching a language. Words and phrases are essential elements in terms of both language use and the transfer of rules in foreign language learning process. The teaching of dichotomy, idioms and proverbs, which are the elements of vocabulary in teaching Turkish to foreigners, has an important place both in developing vocabulary and providing cultural transfer. How much and when to teach words is an important issue. It is necessary to determine which dichotomy, idioms and proverbs should be taught at which language level. In this study, it is aimed to identify the dichotomies, idioms and proverbs in Turkish graded readers for foreigners and to analyze their frequency and distribution by level. For this purpose, the dichotomy, idioms and proverbs in 8 Turkish graded readers for foreigners at A1, A2, B1, B2, and C1 levels published by Erdem Publications have been analyzed for this study that employs document analysis as research design. As a result of the content analysis, it has been observed that proverbs are not included in the readers. In addition, it has been found that the dictohomy and idioms have been included in the readers, but they do not show a regular distribution by language levels.
