Abstract

Language is the fundamental means of conveying and interpreting people's feelings, opinions and imaginations. Therefore, societies place importance on learning and teaching language / languages. Native language and foreign language educations are conducted as indicated in the programs in our country according to the fields of grammar that constitutes the rules section and language skills that constitute the communication section of the language. Recently, there are arguments about teaching grammar rules that require abstract thinking skills. These arguments can be seen in curricula, native language teaching books, questionnaires applied on students and teachers in Turkey and various countries in the world. Also, there are theories such as universal linguistic theory that facilitate learning the second language in teaching grammar. In this research, it has been targeted to identify the problems about teaching grammar and the suggestions for solution. Within the framework of this target, open-end questions have been asked to the Turkish and English teachers built upon interview methods. The data have been analysed relying on the answers that the teachers had given. According to the remarks that the teachers pointed out, the difficulties encountered during language teaching, teaching grammar either at primary school or later, priority or non-priority of the subjects given in Turkish lessons and the subjects given in English lessons, the perspectives of Turkish and English teachers over the relationship between the national language and foreign language have been negotiated and the issue of how language teaching can be improved and ameliorated has been discussed.
