Abstract

This study is an examination of the French-Turkish proverbs and what strategies are used in the translation of idioms, is an examination of the French-Turkish proverbs and idiom translations and what strategies are used in their translation. The translation study will be conducted based on Mona Baker's proverbs and the strategies in the translation of the idiom in the context of cultural items. These strategies are; Similar meaning translates in a similar way (full equivalence), similar meaning in different forms (partial equivalence), expression and subtraction. The aim of the study is to determine the translation strategies used in translating the idioms and proverbs, and to indicate the equivalence and differences in the said translation. The research is important to draw attention to the place and the cultural factor being translated , and also the differences between the source and target language as a result of the translation studies. In the study, translation will be evaluated in four different ways by choosing proverbs and idioms in the framework of different translation strategies by the authors and by translating the similar meaning in a similar way (full equivalence), as well as translating with similar meaning differently (partial equivalence). As a result of the findings, formal and semantic differences and equivalences in proverbs and idiom translation are noted. These differences come from the cultural diversity of two different languages. Proverbs and idioms are a difficult task to translate. It is very rare to transfer a text from one language to another with the culture of that language, using the same expressions. For this reason, the proverbs and idioms examined were translated into different expressions and explanations. Most of the time, the addition and subtraction method was used to get the best meaning on the target side. Extractions made in words or phrases, how to translate joints or ornaments, show how the language can be used and the richness of that language; But from time to time, the fact that the original source does not have any place on the ground in the translated language, looking for expressions points out that the language has not benefited from its richness.
