Abstract

This study aims to identify the metaphors for the use of secondary school students in explaining perceptions of universal values. Application was made with a total of 400 students, 50 males and 50 females from 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grades, who were studying in 7 secondary schools located in the border of the city of Kırşehir in the first semester of 2016-2017 academic year. A total of 320 students' activity papers 40 girls and 40 boys from each class. 320 students developed 105 metaphors for 9 different values in total. 30 most metaphors for love value, 6 at least metaphors for patriotism has been developed. 28 metaphors for honesty value, 17 metaphors for scientific value and responsibility, 16 metaphors for freedom value, 13 metaphors for respect value, 10 different metaphors for peace and values of charity was developed. A total of 105 metaphors for 9 values are 78 different from each other and 27 are commonly produced metaphors. 16 different metaphor for the most honesty value and at least the different metaphor for peace value (4) was produced. Water metaphor is a common metaphor for 6 other values except for values of responsibility, patriotism and benevolence.
