Abstract

Along with developing technology and science, knowing a foreign language has become an integral part and necessity of life. The changing world conditions bestow an important privilege on individuals who speak a foreign language to becoming a world citizen. But the main problem of many people is that they cannot functionally use it as it should be a foreign language that takes place in the syllabus of the whole educational life. Language education is carried out by emphasizing the structural aspect of the language, although it is the first or second foreign language to be included in the education system. Therefore, the knowledge and level of foreign language is developing in the field of language based partially on oral and written comprehension, yet it is inadequate or insufficient in the field of speaking skills. The drama, which completely rejects the memorizing approach in education, propounds to a teaching process which takes it to the center of learning and leads it to a system of critical and collaborative thinking. For this purpose, we aimed to reveal the point of view of students studying especially in foreign language, in this study. The sample of this study is composed by students who have studied and taken drama lessons in the Faculty of Education Foreign Language Education Department French Language Teaching at a state university in Central Black Sea. The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of drama on the development of linguistic skills in foreign language teaching and use qualitative research method consisting of open-ended questions in order to find its contribution and limitations to language teaching and descriptive analysis was performed on the analysis of the data. For this purpose it is required to explain for the teacher candidates participating in the research that how drama is a teaching method, what drama techniques they would prefer to use when they are teachers; how to use drama techniques more intensively in reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. In this way, the drama techniques are required to express their contribution in the teaching of language skills and, if so, what their limitations are. Thus, It has been answered that what is the meaning of drama and its contribution to the foreign language teaching in the view of teacher candidates and proposed solutions for this issue.
