Abstract

In this research, the frequency of processing of conjunctions in the course books used in teaching Turkish as a foreign language according to levels and the type of teaching activities were examined and a framework program for teaching them has been developed. In addition the frequency of the conjunctions in TS Corpus were taken to strengthen the accuracy of the conjunctions determined teaching order of these topics. Thus, the aim was to determine which conjunctions should be taught at each level of proficiency in teaching Turkish as a foreign language. In order to collect data for the research, the content analysis of the course books of four publishers were conducted. The distributions of the obtained data according to the levels were calculated. Then, teaching strategies and techniques used in the teaching of conjunctions were described. Lastly the frequency of conjunctions in TS Corpus were determined. Accordingly, conjunctions were given at most C1, at least A1 level in the course books. In addition, in the course books, the most additive and contrast, the least probability and hypothesis were taught conjunctions. In TS Corpus the most common used conjunctions are: additive and contrast, the least probability and hypothesis. It is determined that a total of 12 techniques were used in the course books for teaching conjunctions. The most common techniques used in the teaching of conjunctions are: fill in the blanks, following sentence, matching, multiple choice. The least used techniques are: making sentences with words, choosing the right word, making sentences, pool by selecting the word, guessing meaning from context, spelling, guidance (speaking about visuals)speaking and guidance (clue sentences) speaking.
