Abstract

Abstract

One of the controversial issues in Turkish is compound sentences formed using “ki”. The “ki” preposition in our language is derived from Persian and was used to ornate prose especially to extend sentences. From the 19th century on in plain prose works based on colloquial language, the functions of “ki” differ from those in ornate prose and poetry; yet, these are not mentioned in grammar books. The unpublished professorship thesis of Mertol Tulum entitled "Sinan Pasha-Maarifetname ( A Study on Compound Sentences with “ki”)" and the study of Muhammed Yelten “On the “Ki” Compund Sentences in Parsname” examine “ki” compound sentences from different perspectives. However, the aim of the present study is to determine the functions of “ki” compound sentences in the works Refik Halit Karay, an author of the final years of the Ottoman Empire and early days of the young Turkish Republic, those are not mentioned in grammar books and thus form a basis for more comprehensive studies. The underlying reason for the selection of Refik Halit Karay and his works is that he is among the authors that do reflect best the spoken language of those days in written prose. In this study, “ki” compound sentences in Refik Halit Karay’s Homeland Stories and Exile Stories are investigated. In the above mentioned stories there are 199 “ki” compound sentences. The sentences studied are categorized in the light of earlier studies on this subject. The “ki” compound sentences in the stories are compared with those of the authors who had been studying the same topic; samples used for different functions are determined and elaborated upon.
